Island View Beach
Saanich Peninsula
A beautiful 2 km beach on the Saanich Peninsula with views of the San Juan Islands. Off-leash for 258 days of the year, leash restrictions apply June 1 to September 15 to protect nesting shorebirds.
About Island View Beach
Island View Beach Regional Park stretches approximately 2 km along the Saanich Peninsula with sweeping views across the Haro Strait to the San Juan Islands in Washington State. It is one of the most scenic beaches in Greater Victoria and a favourite with dog owners during the off-season months.
The beach is part of the Capital Regional District park system and sits within the Victoria Migratory Bird Sanctuary corridor, which is why seasonal restrictions apply. The wide, flat beach is a mix of sand, gravel, and driftwood, perfect for long walks with your dog.
Off-Leash Rules & Seasonal Restrictions
- Off-leash permitted: From October 1 to May 31 (258 days). Dogs can be off-leash on the beach but must remain under close control.
- On-leash required: From June 1 to September 15 (107 days). Dogs must be leashed in all beach and picnic areas. Dogs may only pass through, they cannot stay on the beach during this period.
- Wildlife protection: The restrictions protect nesting shorebirds including the Western Sandpiper and Semipalmated Plover. Roped-off areas are nesting zones, keep dogs well away.
- Dogs must also be on-leash in the campground area at all times. Always follow posted CRD Parks signs for the latest rules.

Entry Points & Parking
Parking lot: Free parking at the main lot near the beach entrance. The lot is moderate in size and fills on sunny summer days. Arrive early on weekends.
Beach access: Main access is from the parking lot area. The beach extends in both directions, walk east for the best views toward the San Juan Islands.
Amenities: Pit toilets near the parking lot. No water fountains. Bring your own water and waste bags.
Best Times to Visit
The beach is quiet and uncrowded. Off-leash with total freedom. Winter light on the San Juan Islands is spectacular.
Bookend months of off-leash season. Milder weather, fewer tourists, and the beach feels like your own private stretch of coastline.
Water Quality & Safety
Island View Beach faces the open Haro Strait with excellent water quality and strong tidal circulation. Blue-green algae is not a concern at this marine beach.
Good to know: The beach can be windy and exposed. Water temperatures are cold year-round, most dogs prefer wading to swimming. Watch for wildlife closure signs near roped-off nesting areas during summer.
Tips from the Happy Homes Team - This is Sahara's (our senior Lab mix) favourite beach. The flat, easy terrain is perfect for older dogs who still love the water.
- Check the CRD Parks website before visiting in summer to see if any sections are closed for wildlife protection.
- Combine with a drive to Sidney for fish and chips at the Sidney Pier after your beach walk.
- Bring a jacket, the beach is exposed and the wind can be brisk even on sunny days.
