Can I Take My Dog to Butchart Gardens? Rules, Tips & What to Expect

The short answer is yes. Butchart Gardens allows dogs on-leash throughout the outdoor garden areas year-round, with one important seasonal restriction. I have taken my own dogs there, and I know a few things that will make your visit smoother than mine was the first time.

I live in Victoria and have visited Butchart Gardens with Ziggy, my 6-year-old Rottweiler, more times than I can count. He loves the walk down to the Sunken Garden and the five pet water fountains scattered around the property. The key is knowing the rules before you go, because they are specific and the staff enforces them.

What are the leash rules at Butchart Gardens?

Your dog must be on a leash no longer than one meter (three feet) at all times. The leash must be held directly at your side. Retractable leashes are not allowed under any circumstances. If you show up with a Flexi, you will be asked to leave it at the entrance or with a non-visiting member of your group.

This is not a suggestion. Butchart Gardens is a formal garden with dense flower beds, narrow pathways, and thousands of visitors daily in peak season. A short leash keeps your dog safe and keeps the gardens intact. I have seen dogs get tangled in retractable leashes around other visitors, and it is stressful for everyone.

Can my dog go inside the restaurants and shops?

No. Only BC Certified Guide and Service dogs are permitted inside the restaurants, the Seed & Gift Store, on the carousel, and on the tour boats. Therapy dogs, companion dogs, and emotional support animals do not qualify under BC's Guide Dog and Service Dog Act, so they are not allowed in these indoor areas.

This means if you want to eat at the Dining Room or the Blue Poppy Restaurant, someone in your group will need to stay outside with the dog. The gardens have plenty of benches and shaded spots near the entrance where you can take turns. The coffee cart near the Rose Garden is a good option if you want a quick drink without leaving your dog alone.

What about the winter holiday season?

This is the one big catch. From December 1 through January 6, dogs are not permitted inside the gardens between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The Christmas lights display draws huge crowds during those hours, and the gardens restrict dogs for safety reasons. Dogs are welcome from 8:00 PM until closing, which is usually 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM depending on the night.

If you want to see the Christmas lights with your dog, go late. The gardens are quieter after 8:00 PM anyway, and the lights look just as good. I have done this with Ziggy on a few cold December nights, and it is genuinely beautiful with fewer people around.

Are there water stations for dogs?

Yes. Butchart Gardens has five pet water fountains located throughout the grounds. They are marked on the garden map you get at the entrance. This is actually better than most public parks in Victoria, where water access for dogs is hit or miss. On a hot summer day, those fountains are a lifesaver.

Waste bags are also provided at the main entrance. The gardens are well-maintained and the staff does a good job keeping the grounds clean, but bring your own bags just in case.

Is Butchart Gardens actually a good walk for a dog?

It depends on your dog. The gardens cover about 55 acres with paved and gravel paths, gentle slopes, and plenty of shade. For a calm, well-behaved dog who enjoys a leisurely stroll with frequent sniff stops, it is a great outing. The paths are wide enough that you do not feel cramped, and there are benches everywhere.

For a high-energy dog who needs to run, this is not the right place. The leash rule is strict, the gardens are crowded in summer, and there is no off-leash area anywhere on the property. If your dog needs to burn energy, do a loop at Elk or Beaver Lake first, then head to Butchart for a relaxed walk afterward. That is our routine: a morning run at Elk Lake, then a calm walk through the gardens on the way home.

When is the best time to visit with a dog?

Early morning, right when the gardens open at 9:00 AM. The crowds are thin, the light is soft, and the gardens are at their quietest. Weekdays are better than weekends. Late afternoon on a weekday is also good, especially in spring and fall when the gardens are less busy.

Summer weekends are the worst time to bring a dog. The gardens can hit several thousand visitors on a sunny Saturday, and the narrow paths feel crowded. If you can only go on a weekend, aim for the first hour after opening or the last hour before closing.

What should I bring?

• A short leash. No retractable leashes. A standard 4-foot leash works perfectly.
• Water and a portable bowl. Even with the pet fountains, it is good to have your own water, especially on hot days.
• Waste bags. They provide them at the entrance, but have your own just in case.
• A towel. If it has rained recently, the gardens can be damp and your dog may get wet feet.
• Your camera. The Sunken Garden, the Rose Garden, and the Japanese Garden are all stunning, and your dog will look great in front of them.

How does the garden fit into a dog-friendly day in Brentwood Bay?

Butchart Gardens is in Brentwood Bay, about 20 minutes north of downtown Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula. The area is worth making a full day of it. The Lochside Regional Trail runs right through the area, and the Brentwood Bay waterfront has a few spots where you can walk your dog along the water. There is also a small park near the Brentwood Bay ferry terminal with a grassy area and a bench.
