Can I Take My Dog to Island View Beach in the Fall?
By Anna Hakim & Perry Fanthorpe, Happy Homes Team at eXp Realty
The Short Answer:
Yes, you can take your dog to Island View Beach in the fall, and it is actually one of the best times of the year to go. The summer ban on dogs in the beach and picnic areas runs from June 1 to September 15, so by mid-September the shoreline is open to dogs again, and the crowds have gone with the season.
Island View is a roughly 2 km stretch of sand on the Saanich Peninsula with the San Juan Islands on the horizon, and it has a long reputation as one of the few beaches where dogs get real freedom. I bring Ziggy here a lot in October, when the light is low and the beach is nearly empty.
What are the dog rules at Island View Beach?
The short version is that dogs are welcome, and the beach has traditionally been one of the more off-leash friendly spots in the region. The CRD's current guidance is to keep your dog under control or on a leash and on the trail, so treat off-leash as a privilege that depends on your dog's recall and behaviour.
The one hard seasonal rule is the summer beach ban. From June 1 to September 15, dogs are not permitted in the designated beach and picnic areas, except to pass through on a leash without stopping. That ban is what protects the nesting shorebirds, and it lifts in the fall.
What should you watch for in fall?
Fall is shorebird migration season, and the CRD explicitly asks visitors to keep dogs on the trail and on leash or under control during spring and autumn migration to protect the birds. The practical version of that rule is simple: if you see a flock of birds on the sand, leash your dog and give them a wide berth.
Beyond the birds, the tide matters more here than at most beaches. At low tide the sand flats extend a long way out, which is fantastic for a running dog. At high tide the beach narrows, so plan around the tide tables if you want room to run.
Why is fall the best season for a dog here?
Summer at Island View is busy, and a crowded beach is not where a dog gets to relax. By October the parking is easy, the sand is cool, and the light is that soft autumn gold that makes the whole walk feel like a postcard. The San Juan Islands across the water are clear on a crisp day.
The cooler weather also means your dog is not overheating on the open sand, which is a real concern in July and August. Fall is the season where you can spend a full hour here without either of you wilting.
What should you bring?
Bring water for your dog, because there is no shade on the beach and even a cool October day can be bright. A long line is handy if you want to give your dog freedom while still respecting the shorebird rule. A towel for the car is non-negotiable, since your dog will come back wet and sandy.
There is free parking on site at 3215 Island View Road, and the beach is easy to reach from the Pat Bay Highway. It is a short drive from Sidney, so you can pair a beach morning with a patio lunch in Sidney afterward.
Why Island View matters for your neighbourhood choice
When clients ask me about the Saanich Peninsula, Island View is one of the first things I mention for dog owners. Central Saanich and the Peninsula give you a big, open beach like this plus the Lochside Regional Trail and Sidney's walkable waterfront, all within a short drive of each other.
The trade-off is that Peninsula homes lean toward larger lots and more driving to get to shops and work. If you want a house with a proper fenced yard and a dog who needs regular beach time, this part of the region is hard to beat, but you should go in knowing the commute reality.
If you are weighing a move to Central Saanich, Sidney, or elsewhere on the Peninsula with a dog in mind, the Happy Homes Team can help you find a property with the yard, fencing, and beach access that fits. Book a consultation and we will match the home to your dog's routine.
