Can I Take My Dog to Mill Hill Regional Park in Langford?
By Anna Hakim & Perry Fanthorpe, Happy Homes Team at eXp Realty
The Short Answer:
Yes, dogs are welcome at Mill Hill Regional Park in Langford, and it is one of the more forgiving summit hikes on the West Shore. Mill Hill is not on the CRD's on-leash list, so dogs can be off-leash here as long as they stay under control at all times. You climb roughly 200 metres in about 20 minutes and come out on a near-360-degree viewpoint over Esquimalt Harbour, the Gorge, and the Victoria skyline.
This is the hike I recommend to clients who want a summit view without a full morning commitment. Perry and I bring Ziggy up here after showings in Langford when we have half an hour to burn, and the dog gets a proper run on the way down.
Is Mill Hill off-leash or on-leash?
Off-leash is allowed under control, just like the rest of the CRD's standard park rule. Mill Hill is not on the CRD's on-leash list, so the official guidance is to keep your dog under control or on a leash. That means voice control, within sight, and a leash carried with you.
The park is not fenced and the summit is open rock, so recall matters. If your dog does not reliably come back when called, keep them leashed and save the off-leash experiments for a fenced park like Langford Station.
How hard is the hike to the summit?
The summit loop is about 3 km round trip, and the climb from the parking lot takes most people around 20 minutes. The core summit loop is closer to 2 km if you want the quickest route. Add a few minutes of sniffing at the top and the whole outing sits comfortably inside an hour.
It is a real climb, steeper than a stroll, but it is short, so it works for dogs who are fit enough for regular walks. Puppies and senior dogs can handle it at a slow pace, and there are flat stretches to rest on the way down.
What can I see from the top?
The summit sits at 203 metres and the view is nearly 360 degrees. You look out over Esquimalt Harbour and Portage Inlet, down over Langford and View Royal, and south toward the Victoria skyline. A bronze peak-finder cairn at the top, built on the foundations of a former forest service lookout tower, points out the landmarks.
Sunset is the golden hour here. The harbour lights come on, the water goes flat and pink, and it is easy to stand at the cairn with the dog and forget you are minutes from the Langford strip.
Where do I park and what else is close by?
There is a free parking lot off Atkins Avenue, with an accessible washroom nearby. From downtown Victoria it is about a 20 minute drive, and from Langford's core it is minutes.
The east-side trails connect directly into Thetis Lake Regional Park, so you can extend the walk into a proper loop. On a long afternoon we park at Mill Hill, summit, and wander through the connector trails until Ziggy is done.
When should I go with a dog?
Weekday mornings are the quietest, and sunset is the most scenic. Fall and winter keep the park cool and the crowds thin, while summer evenings bring more families to the summit, so plan around the sun.
After rain the trail can get slick in the lower forested sections, so take the descent slowly. The summit rock itself drains well and stays grippy in most conditions.
What does Mill Hill access mean for West Shore living?
When buyers ask about Langford and the West Shore, Mill Hill is one of the reasons to say yes. It gives a dog owner a real summit hike within minutes of home, plus Thetis Lake and the Langford Station dog park nearby, which is a strong combination for daily life.
Homes on the Langford side of Mill Hill, or anywhere along Atkins, put all of that at your doorstep. A fenced yard handles the quick breaks, and the hill handles the exercise.
