Is Victoria West a Good Place to Live With a Dog?
By Anna Hakim & Perry Fanthorpe, Happy Homes Team at eXp Realty
The Short Answer:
Yes, Victoria West is one of the most dog-friendly urban neighbourhoods in the city, and we are not saying that because it is our side of the Gorge. It has a fully fenced off-leash park with a separate small-dog section, a second leash-optional stretch at Banfield Park, the Galloping Goose at the end of the street, and dog-friendly waterfront patios, all within a short walk of downtown. It is not the right fit for every dog, though, and the housing reality is more mixed than the park system. Here is the honest breakdown if you are thinking about buying or renting here with a dog.
We know this neighbourhood from the ground. Ziggy and Sahara have worn down the path from our showings around Songhees and Vic West to the Victoria West Dog Park more times than we can count. When clients ask where to live with a dog, this is the neighbourhood we can describe street by street.
Where can my dog run off-leash in Victoria West?
The headline is Victoria West Dog Park, the fenced enclosure in Victoria West Park at 155 Wilson Street. It is fully fenced, has a double-gate entry, and includes a separate small-dog enclosure and drinking water, which makes it the most reliable off-leash spot in the whole downtown area. It is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., the standard leash-optional window for City of Victoria parks. Our complete off-leash park guide rates it the best fenced park for small dogs and puppies because of that separate section.
The second option is Banfield Park, along the Gorge Waterway. The leash-optional area there is a portion of the park between the basketball court and the Victoria West Community Centre parking lot, so read the posted signs before you unclip. Its hours are seasonal: from October 1 to March 31 it runs daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and from April 1 to September 30 it narrows to 6 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. Dogs must be leashed on the swim dock and waterfront dock.
What about the Galloping Goose and the waterfront?
Victoria West sits right on the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, and that is the daily-workhorse answer for most residents. The trail runs through the neighbourhood and across the Selkirk Trestle, with the Switch Bridge parking lot on the downtown edge of Vic West a common access point. The rule on the Goose is simple: dogs are welcome but must stay leashed, everywhere, the whole 55 kilometres. For the full breakdown, see our Galloping Goose dog rules guide.
For a flat, easy evening walk, the waterfront path along the Gorge between downtown and the Selkirk Trestle is a favourite of ours with Sahara, who is 13 and does not need hills. Keep her on leash and let her sniff the tide line. The views across the Gorge to Esquimalt are the reason waterfront condos here hold their value.
Where can I sit on a patio with my dog in Victoria West?
Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub is the neighbourhood's answer to everything, and it has been dog-friendly on its wood-decked waterfront patio for years. The staff bring water bowls without being asked, and they bake house-made dog treats from the spent grain left over from brewing. Ziggy treats Spinnakers as his personal clubhouse, and honestly, so do we.
For something more casual, Wheelies Motorcycle Cafe in Vic West has a low-key dog-friendly patio, and Fisherman's Wharf is a short leash walk from the south end of the neighbourhood, where dogs are welcome on the floats on-leash and the park has a 6:30 a.m. leash-optional hour. Our full dog-friendly patio guide has the details on all of them.
What dog rules do I have to follow here?
Victoria West is inside the City of Victoria, so the city's rules apply: dogs must be leashed everywhere except the designated leash-optional areas, which number 15 across the city, and your dog needs a current City of Victoria licence. The city also caps households at six dogs combined, which only matters if you are running a small pack. Waste has to be bagged and carried out. On the whole it is a straightforward, well-signposted system.
What is the housing actually like with a dog?
This is where you need to be honest with yourself. Victoria West is a mix of older character houses, newer condos and townhomes along the Songhees waterfront, and a few rental buildings near downtown. If you are looking at a condo or townhome, the building's strata bylaws decide everything, and dog rules vary from building to building, so read the pet bylaw before you make an offer. Our 10 questions to ask a strata council walks through exactly what to check.
Older houses in Vic West often have modest, sloped yards rather than big flat lawns, which is fine for a dog that gets its real exercise at the park and on the trail. If a large flat fenced yard is a must, you will find more of that further out in Saanich or the Westshore. What you trade is walkability: most of the neighbourhood is ten to fifteen minutes on foot from downtown, which means the dog's morning run does not require starting the car.
Is Victoria West right for your dog?
Victoria West suits the urban dog and the owner who wants everything reachable on foot: the fenced park, the trail, the patios, the vet and the pet supply store at For Pet's Sake on Wilson Street. It suits small dogs and puppies especially well because of the Victoria West Dog Park's separate small-dog section. It is less ideal if you want a big private yard or quiet forest trails at the door, which are the reasons people look at Saanich or the Westshore instead.
When we help people buy in this neighbourhood, we ask about the same things we care about for our own dogs: the fence line, the walk route to the off-leash park, the strata pet rules, and whether the yard drains before we talk about anything cosmetic. Those details are what make daily life with a dog work, and they are easy to overlook on a quick showing.
