Dog-Friendly Patios Open Labour Day Weekend

Labour Day is the unofficial end of patio season in many Canadian cities, but Victoria's mild climate means most patios stay open well into September and October. These are our top picks for the long weekend, all confirmed as dog-friendly and open on Labour Day Monday.

Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub, Victoria West

Ziggy's undisputed number one. Spinnakers sits right on the Gorge Waterway with a wood-decked patio that welcomes dogs with open arms. The staff bring water bowls and house-made spent-grain dog treats without being asked. The view over the harbour is the best seat in town for a late summer afternoon. Book ahead, Labour Day is busy.

Whistle Buoy Brewing Co. in Market Square

The courtyard patio at Whistle Buoy is one of the most dog-welcoming spots in downtown Victoria. The brick courtyard is sheltered from wind, the staff bring out water and treats, and the beer list is excellent. The covered and heated patio means this spot works for evening pints too, when the temperature drops.

The Beagle Pub in Cook Street Village

The Beagle Pub provides orthopedic dog beds on their covered and heated patio. Your dog can curl up in memory-foam comfort while you enjoy a pint and classic pub food. It is busy on long weekends, so arrive early or be ready to wait.

Dog-Friendly Beaches and Parks for the Long Weekend

Late August and early September are a transition period for beach rules in Greater Victoria. Here is exactly what applies for Labour Day Weekend 2026.

Year-Round Off-Leash Beaches (Always Open)

These beaches have no seasonal restrictions and are open for off-leash fun every day of the year:

• Dallas Road off-leash zone (east of Douglas Street to Clover Point) : off-leash year-round. In summer, the off-leash window is 6-9 AM and 5-10 PM in the designated Beacon Hill Park area, but the Dallas Road waterfront strip itself is always off-leash.
• Parker Park, Cordova Bay : one of the only year-round off-leash beaches in Greater Victoria. No seasonal restrictions at all.
• Sandcut Beach, near Metchosin : off-leash year-round. A short trail through the woods leads to a pebble beach. Worth the drive.
• Esquimalt year-round off-leash beach : one of Esquimalt's 6 leash-optional locations. Accessible year-round.

Seasonal Beaches (Restrictions Still Active)

These beaches are still under summer leash restrictions through Labour Day weekend. Beach restrictions remain in effect until September 15 for CRD regional parks.

• Island View Beach : on-leash until September 15. The off-leash section remains open after that date.
• Thetis Lake Beach : on-leash until September 15. The trails around the lake are open, but the beach area is restricted.
• Willows Beach, Oak Bay : dogs prohibited May 1 through September 30. Willows Beach is completely off-limits over Labour Day. Use Cattle Point or Uplands Park instead (off-leash permitted July through March).
• Gonzales Beach, Oak Bay : complete dog ban June 1 through August 31. Labour Day weekend falls at the very end of the ban period. Check signage.
• Cordova Bay Beach : dogs restricted May 1 to August 31 except before 9:00 AM. Restrictions lift on September 1. By Labour Day Monday, Cordova Bay is fully open again.

Best Parks for a Long Weekend Walk

These parks are excellent choices for a Labour Day walk with your dog. They are quieter than the peak summer months and offer a range of terrain and leash options.

• Mount Douglas Park (PKOLS), Saanich : 5 km of trails to the 213-metre summit with off-leash zones in designated areas. The views over Haro Strait are spectacular on a clear day. Remember that Saanich bans retractable leashes in all parks. Use a fixed-length leash.
• Thetis Lake Regional Park, View Royal : 6 km of trails with 5 off-leash zones. The lake beach is on-leash through September 15, but the trails are open. Perfect for a shaded forest walk on a warm afternoon.
• Elk and Beaver Lake, Saanich : 10 km loop trail with a dedicated dog beach area. Seasonal restrictions apply at the main beach through September 15, but the trails and dog beach are excellent options.
• Galloping Goose Regional Trail : 55 km of continuous trail from downtown Victoria to Sooke. Any section of the trail makes for a great long weekend walk. Try the stretch through Viaduct Flats for water access.
• Esquimalt Gorge Park : recently renovated park along the Gorge Waterway with walking paths and a designated off-leash area. Great for families and dogs who like calm, scenic walks.

What About the Saanich Fair?

The Saanich Fair runs Labour Day weekend, September 5-7, 2026, at the Saanich Fairgrounds on Stelly's Cross Road. It is one of the oldest agricultural fairs on Vancouver Island and worth visiting if you have never been. However, dogs are not permitted on the fairgrounds unless they are entered in a competition. Plan for your dog to stay home with a frozen Kong, a puzzle feeder, or a midday dog walker visit while you enjoy the fair.

Safety Reminders for the Long Weekend

Labour Day is a celebration, but the same summer hazards still apply. Here is a quick refresher for the long weekend.

Barbecue and Picnic Hazards

Corn cobs, cooked bones, and greasy food scraps are the top three reasons dogs end up at the emergency vet over long weekends. Corn cobs cause intestinal blockages that require surgery. Cooked bones splinter and can perforate the digestive tract. Fatty foods trigger pancreatitis. Keep all food waste in a sealed container and out of your dog's reach.

Heat and Hydration

Late August in Victoria can still produce temperatures above 25 degrees. Pavement gets hot enough to burn paws by mid-afternoon. Walk your dog in the early morning or evening when the ground is cool. Carry a collapsible water bowl and offer water every 15 to 20 minutes during active play. Never leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows down.

Blue-Green Algae

Late summer is peak blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) season in Victoria's lakes. Check current advisories before letting your dog swim in Thetis Lake, Elk Lake, or Beaver Lake. Blue-green algae blooms can produce toxins that are fatal to dogs within hours. If the water looks discoloured, has a surface sheen, or smells unusual, keep your dog out.

Identification
