What to bring for a rainy patio visit

• A towel. Dry your dog before they settle. A wet dog on a patio is uncomfortable for the dog and less welcome to staff and other diners.
• A dry mat or blanket. A familiar surface gives your dog a designated spot to lie on and keeps them off the damp ground.
• A dog coat. Dogs get cold faster when they are damp and sitting still. If your dog has short fur or runs cold, a lightweight dog coat makes a rainy patio visit much more comfortable.
• A collapsible bowl and water. Even if the restaurant provides bowls, having your own ensures your dog stays hydrated.
• Treats. A quiet, settled dog is more likely to be welcome on a return visit. Treats reinforce the calm behaviour you want.

Know when to call it

Not every rainy day is a patio day. If the wind is driving the rain sideways, if the heaters cannot keep up with the temperature, or if your dog is shivering or showing signs of stress, pack it up and try another day. Most of these patios have indoor sections where dogs are not allowed, so moving inside is usually not an option.
