After a few years of taking Ziggy and Sahara to holiday events around the city, I have learned what works and what is better left to a solo outing. Here is what you can do with your dog and what to watch for.

Can I take my dog to see Christmas lights in Victoria?

Lights of Wonder at Centennial Square in downtown Victoria is the best dog-friendly holiday light display in the city. It is free, outdoor, and runs through December. The display features themed light exhibits, interactive light tunnels, and a 40-foot Christmas tree. The organizers explicitly welcome dogs on-leash, which is rare for a downtown holiday event.

The square gets busy on weekends and during special events like the tree-lighting ceremony, so go on a weekday evening if your dog is not comfortable with crowds. The lights stay on through the evening, and the paved surface is easy on paws. Bring water and be prepared for the sound of the live music if the stage is active. It can be loud for a sensitive dog.

Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay also runs a spectacular Christmas lights display from early December through early January. Over a million lights cover the gardens, and the display includes an outdoor skating rink, carolers, and hot chocolate. Dogs are allowed on-leash in the outdoor garden areas during the Christmas season. The paths are well-maintained and lit, but the gardens can get crowded, especially on weekends. Go early and on a weeknight if you can.

Where can I cut a Christmas tree with my dog?

Saanichton Christmas Tree Farm on the Saanich Peninsula is the real deal. It is a working you-cut tree farm, not a lot with pre-cut trees in a parking lot. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the owners ask that you clean up after your dog. This is one of our favourite holiday traditions with Ziggy and Sahara. The farm has a beautiful setting, and the dogs enjoy the walk through the rows of firs and pines.

Bring your own saw (they have some available, but bringing your own is more reliable) and a towel for the car. The farm can get muddy in December, and your dog will find the wettest patch of ground. The trees are priced by height, and they accept cash and debit. The farm is open from late November through Christmas Eve, but call ahead to confirm hours, especially in December when hours can change.

If you are looking for a pre-cut tree, most lots in Victoria do not allow dogs, so stick to the farm if you want to bring your dog along.

Are there any dog-friendly Christmas markets in Victoria?

Most indoor Christmas markets in Victoria do not allow dogs. The large holiday markets are typically held in community centres, hotels, and convention spaces where health regulations and space constraints mean dogs are not welcome. The Vancouver Christmas Market, for example, does not allow pets except service animals, and the same rule applies to most indoor markets in Victoria.

Your best bet for a market-like experience with your dog is the outdoor holiday markets run by local breweries. Driftwood Brewery on Hillside Avenue and Whistle Buoy Brewing Co. in Market Square sometimes host outdoor holiday pop-ups with vendors, and both locations are dog-friendly. How do I keep my dog safe during the holidays?

Christmas introduces a lot of new hazards for dogs, and most of them are indoors. The Christmas tree water is a real risk if your dog drinks it. Stagnant tree water can contain bacteria, mould, and fertilizer that cause vomiting and diarrhea. Cover the tree stand or use a tree skirt that blocks access.

Chocolate is the obvious one. Keep all chocolate, especially dark chocolate and baking chocolate, out of reach. Poinsettias are mildly toxic to dogs and can cause drooling and mouth irritation. Tinsel and ribbon are dangerous if swallowed and can cause intestinal blockages that require surgery.

Secure your Christmas tree so it cannot tip over if your dog bumps into it or pulls on a low-hanging ornament. Skip the glass ornaments on the lower branches. We learned this one the hard way when Ziggy wagged his tail into the tree and sent three ornaments flying. Use shatterproof ornaments on the bottom third of the tree.

What about New Year's Eve with my dog?

New Year's Eve is the worst night of the year for dog anxiety. Fireworks go off across Victoria, and the noise can be terrifying for dogs. If your dog is sensitive to loud noises, plan ahead. Walk them earlier in the day, before the fireworks start. Set up a safe space in a quiet room with a crate or bed, and play white noise or calming music to mask the sound.
