Tips for Enjoying Pet-A-Palooza with Your Dog

Arrive Early for Parking

The event runs from 11 AM to 4 PM, but the peak crowd hits around 12:30 PM. Getting there right at 11 AM means a quieter experience and better parking options along Dallas Road. Street parking along Dallas Road fills up fast. Your best bet is to park at the Mile 0 lot at the foot of Douglas Street or on the residential side streets off Cook Street. Better yet, walk or bike if you live nearby. The Dallas Road waterfront trail connects easily to Beacon Hill Park, Fairfield, and James Bay neighbourhoods.

Bring Water and a Shade Shelter

August 16 will almost certainly be warm, and Dallas Road has limited natural shade. A small pop-up tent or umbrella makes a huge difference for keeping your dog cool between activities. Pack a collapsible water bowl and a frozen water bottle that thaws through the day. There are water stations on site, but lines can get long. If your dog is panting heavily, find shade and offer water before continuing.

Keep Your Dog Leashed in Crowds

A festival with hundreds of dogs means crowds, children, and unexpected noises. Keep your dog on a standard fixed-length leash (not a retractable one) for their safety and everyone else's. Even a well-trained dog can get startled in a festival environment. If your dog is nervous in crowds, arrive early before the peak hours or find a quiet spot on the grass away from the main crowd where they can settle.

Know Your Dog's Limits

The event is loud, busy, and full of other dogs. If your dog shows signs of stress (excessive panting, tucked tail, refusing treats, whale eye), take a break on the grass away from the main crowd or head home early. There is no shame in leaving after an hour. Not every dog is an event dog. Sahara, our 13-year-old Lab mix, stayed home last year and that was the right call for her. Ziggy, our 6-year-old Rottweiler, was in heaven.

Check the Dallas Road Off-Leash Area Next Door

One of the best features of the Dallas Road location is that the Dallas Road off-leash zone is right next to the event site. You can arrive early, let your dog run on the bluff before the crowds arrive, then head to the festival. Or use the off-leash area as a decompression spot if your dog needs a break from the crowds.

Making a Day of It Along the Waterfront

The Dallas Road waterfront is one of Victoria's great public spaces, and Pet-A-Palooza is the perfect excuse to spend a full Sunday along the shore.
