Where Can I Walk My Dog on Christmas Day in Victoria?
By Anna Hakim & Perry Fanthorpe, Happy Homes Team at eXp Realty
The Short Answer:
Public parks in Victoria stay open on Christmas Day, so you and your dog are not stuck doing laps around the living room. Beacon Hill Park, the Dallas Road waterfront, and the rest of the city's parks are open daily year-round; the holiday closures only apply to City facilities like City Hall and Crystal Pool.
Christmas morning is one of my favourite dog walks of the year. The city is quiet, the trails are empty, and Ziggy gets the waterfront to himself for an hour before the day starts. We have done the same loop for years.
Which parks are open on Christmas Day?
Beacon Hill Park is open every day of the year, and the leash-optional zone at the south end runs roughly 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. in fall and winter. The grass below Dallas Road between Douglas Street and Clover Point has similar seasonal off-leash hours, so a Christmas morning run along the water works.
Willows Beach in Oak Bay is open to leashed dogs below the high-tide mark from October 1 to April 30. Thetis Lake Regional Park's forest trails stay open daily with dogs on leash, and the off-leash dog beach at West Beach is free of the summer beach restrictions this time of year.
Out on the West Shore, Goldstream Provincial Park is open daily for a proper forest walk. Saxe Point Park in Esquimalt keeps its leash-optional headland open, and the Galloping Goose is always there for a long leashed walk in any direction.
What about parking on Christmas Day?
The City of Victoria makes it easy: parking is free at city parkades and on-street meters on Christmas Day. That removes the usual excuse for skipping the walk, and it means you can drive to a favourite park without feeding the meter.
How do you keep the Christmas walk calm?
Go early, before the family chaos starts. A standard fixed-length leash, a pocket of treats, and water for the dog are the whole kit; the goal is a quiet hour, not a training session.
If it is pouring, pick a covered route instead of skipping the walk. The forest trails at Thetis Lake or Francis/King Regional Park hold up in the rain, and a shorter Beacon Hill loop uses the big trees as shelter.
Why year-round walking access matters when you choose a neighbourhood
Christmas Day is a good test of a neighbourhood: the parks that stay open every day of the year are the ones your dog will actually use. Buyers who live near Dallas Road, Beacon Hill, or the Goose get a daily walking routine that never closes for holidays.
If a year-round walking route matters to you, the Happy Homes Team can show you homes within reach of the parks that never shut. Book a consultation and we will match the house to your dog's routine, not the other way around.
